Family Tree Research
At Irish connections we have the resources and experience to provide in-depth family tree research services.
Irish Family Tree Research
Whether you were born and raised in Ireland or you are a member of the Irish Diaspora, tracing your Irish ancestry can be a minefield to put it mildly. There are many issues that people encounter and which can bring them to the infamous “wall”. Some examples of these are detailed below.
Irish civil registration only began in 1864
There are records from before that date but there are no guarantees as they are local Parish registers and some have been lost or destroyed while most lack detail.
Naming Traditions
The tendency in Ireland to use the same names over and over within families could mean there are several John Smiths within the same townland also there is no guarantee that there would not be more than one John Smith whose parents were both called John and Mary Smith within that townland.
Misinformation
People were either unsure of their age or deliberately misinformed record keepers especially in Census records. This can really throw off the researcher when cross referencing records
Missing Records
Records were destroyed including a lot of the census records from the 1800s.
These are just a selection of the problems that the family tree researcher can encounter and at Irish connections we have many years of experience in dealing with issues such as these and have learned how to analyse the existing records and cross-reference with other sources in order to get to the truth.
We have access to databases in Ireland, UK, USA, Canada and Australia in fact anywhere the Irish Diaspora have gone. And this is important as the journeys of our emigrants have sometimes had waystops for example those who left Ireland for the UK and after a few years or even a generation have moved on to the USA, Canada or Australia.
